The FOF team headed back to Assateague to meet up with the sharks along with Mike and Kim Constanzo, two new friends we made on the first trip. Super cool people who love fishin and just being on the beach. The rain kept them away the first day but it had no effect on the fishin. My nephew Mike and I wrestled up an 80lb dusky on our first cast. As we were reeling it in we met another cool cat named Randy. This guy is the best surfer Ive ever seen at Assateague and just loves to fish. He lost it when we blasted out our second bait and decided he wanted to hang with us for a while. The rain started coming down hard as we hooked into what we thought was a huge shark but turned out to be a giant ray. With the help of my nephew and new found friend we landed that carpet. It was well over 100lbs. Sunday came around and we woke to Pete "the Kayak Kid" walking a big shark though the surf in front of us. I helped him land it, we took a few pictures and released it. I ran into Pete the night before but we were both exhausted from the day of fishing. We decided we'd talk more in the morning.
After a bunch of hand shaking we decided to make it a contest as the stage was already set...man against machine. Pete fought his way through some very rough surf to get his bait way out there.
I was very impressed with his die hard attitude. I couldn't believe he was beating us 5 to 0. In our defense we missed five fish; two of which were monsters. But that doesn't cut it when your fishin, just another story. It was nearing 4 o'clock when Pete realized he was out of bait. He had to run and get more so we seized the opportunity and started blasting whole bunkers way out there.
By the time Pete returned we had landed three sharks, two dusky's and one sandbar shark. The contest went until dark with the score even at seven. Pete should have taken the crown with a monster but it slipped the crimp in the surf as I was gently holding the leader. You make the call on that one...ouchhhh!
Hope to see him again for a rematch. Thanks again to Randy, Mike, and Kim for all the support they are now part of the FOF Team
