FOF In The News At The Republican Herald

Republican Herald Interview
Dan Triano - Republican Herald Article

(View Original Article) NEW RINGGOLD - Although Dan Triano and his family moved to Schuylkill County when he was a toddler, he never lost the love of the surf in his native New Jersey.

By 2003, the 1985 Tamaqua High graduate had become a veteran surf angler, but Triano had grown increasingly frustrated with the conventional methods used to cast bait out into the ocean. While some seasoned surf fishermen can cast bait more than 100 yards, very few can achieve that distance with heavy weight and large bait that greatly increase one's chances of catching the "big one."

Knowing that many other surf anglers shared this frustration, Triano and his friend Doug Osenbach began to work on a product that would revolutionize surf fishing by launching bait instead of casting it. As they developed their idea, they knew they were on to something extraordinary, and after months of hard work they patented a stainless steel casting system that uses compressed air to launch bait up to 300 yards out into the ocean.

Marketed as the "Shore Shot Bait Caster," Triano and Osenbach take pride in the fact this innovative fishing apparatus is American made. Additionally, Osenbach holds a special place in his heart for soldiers that are wounded in the line of duty and, keeping their brave efforts and sacrifices in mind, went to work designing a uniquely engineered bait launcher for people with disabilities called the "Handi Caster" that can be attached to wheelchairs.

Today, their company, "Far Out Fishin' " ships products to customers in the United States, South Africa, Australia and the United Kingdom. Triano believes there is not a more exciting way for surf anglers to pursue big gamefish.

"How the system works is bait is frozen into large bait molds with a specially designed lead sinker, and the frozen bait slides down into a launch tube that is positioned over the compressed air tank," Triano said. "A fishing rod rests above the launch tube with the bait attached, and when the desired air pressure is reached, you simply push the lever forward and the bait launches out of the tube with lightening-fast precision.

"This enables someone to have three or more baits up to 300 yards out into the water within 10 minutes. There is simply no more efficient or exciting way to surf fish."

Like moths being attracted to a flame, a crowd always gathers when a Shore Shot is set up on the beach. Curious and enthusiastic onlookers eagerly anticipate what is to come, and when the bait is launched, the crowd watches it until it lands in the water.

"People laugh, whistle and clap their hands in amazement," Triano said. "When the sharks are reeled in, the crowds just get bigger."

In 2010, "Far Out Fishin' " volunteered to assist the National Marine Fishery Service with the Cooperative Shark Tagging program in research directed at the study of the biology of large Atlantic sharks. With the proven casting distance of the "Shore Shot Bait Caster," it has been able to have quite an impact on the shark-tagging efforts of the NMFS.

Triano also enjoys teaching kids of all ages the true joy of fishing, often taking them on trips to Assateague, Md., and the Jersey Shore. He has them help him with every aspect of the trip, from packing, to setting up camp, baiting the rod, launching the caster and breaking everything down for the trip home.

In between the excitement of reeling in sharks, the young anglers manage enjoy the beach with a game of Wiffle Ball. All the while, valuable lessons are learned and there are plenty of smiles on the happy faces of youngsters who have spent a day with the crew from "Far Out Fishin.' "
