Video - Tagging A Shark and A Huge Sting Ray - Video Included
Good Morning Delmarva! We started off the weekend a little early by showing up to the WMDT television station for an interview. The interview went well and at the end we got to plug our bunker buddy John Henry from "John Henry's bait and tackle." After the interview Sheri and I grabbed some supplies at the Food Lion and hit the beach.
We set up with Mike and Kim and blasted a few baits. The water was warm so we figured, "game on." It wasn't long before our man, "Randy the Surfer" showed up along with Logan. The Far Out Crew is beginning to grow! With plenty of fresh bait in the water we anticipated a quick bite. I was a little concerned about the water clarity. It was very murky compared to last week and the bait fish were no were to be found. With no bites (with the exception of a small shark caught by Randy off his surfboard) we started to wonder where the big ones were.
Nearing the end of the day I decided to pass the time by sharpening my knife and that's all it took…WHAM! The rod, that I connected to my truck went down. After an hour I figured out it was a ray but knew it was a huge one. Just before the first hour mark, the crowd began to gather and decided it was something they all needed to see. Boy was it ever! Nearing the second hour of the battle we finally landed the beast. I know I said a few weeks ago we caught the biggest stingray ever. Scratch that. This guy was 75lbs. bigger and just wowed everyone when it hit the beach. We got a few quick pictures and within a minute released him back into the sea. What a battle! My arms were pumped and full of adrenalin. That's what I love about fishing the most. It's that give and take battle…. you have to know when to back off and when to suck it up! We won this battle but after looking at the swivel it could have easily gone the other way. It was completely pulled apart and holding on by a thread….great fight!
Saturday, Sheri had set up a meeting with Zane from Blue Ridge Cable. When he arrived I drove to the entrance to pick him up. On the way out he was surprised at how cool the beach was and enjoyed the fact that you could drive right on. It's always great to open someone's eyes to something new. We pulled into our spot and he started setting up his camera. He asked me if I could explain the scene and how the caster works. We hooked up a mic and went at it. We got tons of great instructional video which we'll use on our website. The sharks were not cooperating so Kim started up a whiffle ball game to pass the time. Zane joined in on the fun and smashed a home run. It was a great shot but not good enough to beat the local boys. It wasn't long after that he had to go.
Video - Tagging A Huge Sting Ray And Shark
We were a little disappointed in the fact that we had a great video guy but no sharks. We said our goodbyes and let him know he can hang with the FOF crew anytime. Thanks Zane. The crowd thinned out and before we knew it only my friend Jamie and his family remained with Sheri and I. With the sun going down and hopes of a shark fading, the rod slammed again. As soon as I pulled back I could feel it was another huge ray. Not Again! The problem with this monster was the tide was going out which made the battle nearly impossible. I hung in there not knowing how I would release him by myself. I asked my friend Jamie if he had gloves he said yes so I knew if I didn't drag him up too far I'd be able to drag him back to the sea after unhooking him. The battle lasted for an hour and twenty minutes; not nearly as big as the one Friday but a horse none the less. I hate to admit it, but it wore my ass out. My hand was killing me from holding the spool back but I wasn't about to quit. Fishing off the beach for large fish teaches many lessons.
The most important one is to never give up. It's always a different scenario so you always have to adapt to the situation. All in all it was a great weekend. Thanks to everyone that showed up to support the team. I'm heading back Wednesday to meet my friend Jeff Stahler and tag some sharks so if you're in the area give me a shout. I'd love to get you hooked on the dream!
A special Thanks To Jeff Jr. for helping me with tagging a dusky shark before dark. I also want to thank a young man named Nick who is also the tagging video. He was a huge help with the process. I must not forget Kim who just nailed the tagging video. ThanksKim. And as always Thanks to big Mike for being his fearless self . It comes in handy when dealing with these huge fish. Another great mission complete see ya next week.
